ART EIGHT

Duchess Park Secondary School
ART 8

This course is an enjoyable five-week course that provides a sequential foundation for art students. Students are encouraged to use their creativity to solve problems that are presented while producing art in a variety of mediums. Students are reassured that this is a time to learn, to relax and not be overly critical of their work. Emphasis is placed on effort.

Project One: Working with lettering as an art form. Create your portfolio design thinking of style, pattern and design. Learn how to create a modern graffiti style of lettering.
Project Two: Portraits and facial proportions. Practice drawing each other.
Project Three: 'Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain' exercises. Draw the horse, Porsche, or old truck using the 'upside down technique.'
Project Four: Drawing from a model and from a stillife. Learning about line quality  and how it is used to enhance a drawing and learning shading techniques for ink line and for pencil work.
Project Five: Clay work. Create a monster using the single pinch pot technique. Practice sound clay building techniques by using slip and scoring techniques to create strong joins when adding features to the project. Create a second project of a creature or a piggy bank using the double pinch pot technique.
Project Six: Learn a working knowledge of one, two and three point perspective and apply this knowledge when creating a drawing. Use tone and shade to turn this drawing into an illusion of a three dimensional scene. Learn to observe atmospheric perspective and to use it in paintings of drawings.
Project Seven: Explore colour theory. Learn the colour wheel and the colour schemes. Apply a complimentary colour scheme to a David Hockney style landscape.
Practice layering colours and patterns in a painting.
Project Eight: Explore first nations art forms.

Homework drawings are due each Thursday.
